FURNACE SITE - Much work has taken place at the old furnace site since the last newsletter. Do you recall how grown up it was with privet hedge?  Privet is a successful invasive species because of its ability to outcompete and therefore displace native vegetation - evidence this as the site appeared when reclamation efforts were first begun. History

During the late 1800's and early 1900s the Shelby Iron Works was the South's largest charcoal-fired blast furnace. It played a vital part during the Civil War with iron production, as well as post-war producing train car wheels. Shelby was a company town with many of the buildings built by the company.

This is an official site of the Historic Shelby Association, (HSA). We are the non-profit organization that owns and operates Shelby Iron Works Park, Shelby, Alabama.
