Since you can’t buy sorghum syrup just anywhere, most people are not familiar with this unique Southern sweetener. Sorghum syrup has its own special flavor, that makes it perfect for certain dishes and desserts. So, to help you bring back memories from your Southern childhood, or to learn new ideas in cooking, we thought we’d help you get started! Here are some quick tips, as well as great recipes that feature sorghum’s flavor:

  • To make a hot sorghum syrup, heat 1/2 cup of pure sorghum syrup in a skillet over medium heat. Sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda; stir and simmer until foamy and thickened. Serve over biscuits, pancakes, or waffles.
  • Add it to just about any recipe calling for molasses or honey (glazed carrots or beets, glazed ham, molasses cookies, gingerbread, etc.).
